The grieving process is a long one and can cause undue suffering, hurt, guilt and financial burden. We can be victims ourselves or it could be a loved one, a friend or a co-worker. Victim and Offenders Mitigation Initiative, is a non-profit organization founded in 2011, which became my answer to healing from grief and loss after being victimized in 1995.  The healing process has been long but I choose not to take the road of bitterness and resentment.  The need in the community was greater and exceeded the pain that I felt.  I said to myself “I must help the other victims”.

Although the District Attorney’s victim assistant walked my family and myself through the court trial and court proceedings, once my offenders were tried and sentenced, the help went away.  The victims’ grief and sorrow has a grip on them especially at the time of court trials.  However it does not go away when the trial is over.  The focus on their personal matters is far from the mind of the victim during these times.  The follow up process is an area that so needful.  This need has gave me new direction and now my life is dedicated to supporting victims and offenders.

Actively established since 2011, VOMI is a non-profit organization that will service and support victims through the grief process as well educate on victim rights and victim compensation. I work as a mediator and restorative justice facilitator for offenders that have suffered guilt and who desire to make amends with victim by facilitating that process with victim and offender.

My goal is to give victims the courage to speak in a conducive manner through their healing of guilt, grief and pain to become a voice that is beneficial for their needs and their community. VOMI plans to expand nationwide and offer restorative justice philosophy and practices to victims and prison outreach to offenders.  My developing strategies for the future are continued development of grief and guilt support.  Training and educating future volunteers and workers and attending legislative sessions to improve laws governing victims’ rights.
